Spice Tour

Learn about the role of spices in Singapore's culture and history

Spices are intrinsically interwoven into the history of Singapore. From the first traders in fragrant spices that landed on this shores centuries, possibly millennia ago, to the nutmeg and lemongrass plantations of the 19th century, they were key in the development of the city.

At the Fort Canning spice garden we can see and smell many of the spices shaped the history of the region: the local Malay spices used by the 13th century Malay royals that lived here and some from across the region like nutmeg, cloves and others that triggered the spice rush from the 16th century onwards and brought the colonial British to the spice island.

Geylang Serai market is the perfect place to rummage the stalls for regional spices used in local cuisine and medicine and at the food court we can sample the wares.
