Who will be your guide?

Karien van Ditzhuijzen is a writer and a Singapore Tourism Board (STB) licensed tour guide. During her life, she has had many careers. Her childhood dream was to become a perfumer, but after a degree in chemistry, she started her first job as a product developer for a multinational, creating new ice cream flavours. Three children and an intercontinental move later she decided to pursue another childhood dream and became a writer. She started to volunteer with a local charity supporting migrant workers and helped them document their stories. After publishing two novels, a children’s book and an anthology of stories by migrant domestic workers, she was ready for a new challenge, and became a docent and tour guide, showing guests around her favourite places. Having lived in eight countries – and counting, she calls Singapore home since 2012 and likes to show visitors that this city is anything but boring. Its multicultural society has many, many facets and like an onion, always has new layers to unearth underneath its shiny surface.

Karien loves writing and sharing stories, researching and exploring, and continues to learn every day. In her tours she likes to focus on history, different cultures, nature and finding new angles to look at the fascinating world around us. Her tours will take you off the beaten track, were we will find hidden treasures that are seemingly forgotten in the rush of modern Singapore.
