Temenggong Walking Tour
Who were the Temenggongs of Singapore and what was their role in the development of the city?
During this walking tour you will learn about the Temenggongs of Singapore, Malay royal rulers under the Sultan who were the de facto leaders of the Malay in Singapore. The Temenggongs lived in Telok Blangah since the early 19th century and were instrumental in developing not only Keppel harbour, but all of Singapore and even modern Johor, where the family are still the ruling monarchs.
The slopes of Mount Faber and the area around Keppel Harbour were all Temenggong land, which we will explore to see remnants of this important yet oft forgotten past. We can visit the Tememggong Daeng Ibrahim Mosque, the Kampong Marang Malay cemetery, and Radin Mas keramat (a Malay shire supposedly dedicated to a royal princess) .
Strolling around Keppel Harbour and and Labrador Park we will try to look past modern developments and condominiums and bring back to life the old bay, home or the Orang Laut sea nomads, Malay pirates and many more colourful characters from Telok Blangah's illustrious past.
