Alexandra Park Walking Tour

Black and White Houses of Alexandra Park Walking Tour

During this tour we will explore the historic area of Alexandra Park with its colonial Black and Whites Houses. We will hear about the military background of the area, the architecture of its houses and the development of the landscape.

Initially an old nutmeg plantation, Alexandra Park became the area where officers of the British military were housed. The green and hilly estate is a lovely spot for a stroll, during which you can learn about the architecture of the houses built in different eras, to house different ranks of officers. From the early plantation house, to the traditional black and whites of the 1920s and the modernist tropical art deco style of the 1930s and 40s.

You will hear stories about what life was life for the British colonials of the early 20th century but we will also discuss who else lived here, like the Chinese, Malay and Indian servants that helped run the household.

We will also visit the house of the commanding officer that during the Indian mutiny of 1915 was besieged by Indian sepoys. Why were they so unhappy that they decided to revolt?

Several other interesting sites surrounded the neighbourhood, and we can look at their role during the Japanese invasion in WW2, and after. If you like to extend the route, we can visit the old government-run opium factory, now a museum Reflections at Bukit Chandu, or simply enjoy the scenery of adjoining Kent Ridge Park or HortPark.
